How Dividend Income Works

Dividend per share

The cash amount a company declares for each eligible share over a stated period.

Annual dividend income

Your shares multiplied by the annual dividend per share.

Dividend yield

Annual dividend per share divided by share price, expressed as a percentage.

Payment frequency

How often annual dividends are divided and paid: monthly, quarterly, semiannually, or annually.

Dividend growth

The assumed annual rate at which dividend per share changes in this estimate.

Dividend reinvestment

Net payments can buy additional fractional shares, which may generate more future income.

Dividend Reinvestment

Reinvesting dividends uses each net payment to purchase additional fractional shares at the estimated share price for that payment period. Those added shares participate in later payments, which can increase future dividend income. Reinvestment can also increase exposure to share-price losses; the estimate is not a guarantee.

Calculation Assumptions

  • Dividends are not guaranteed.
  • Companies may increase, reduce, suspend, or eliminate dividends.
  • Share-price and dividend-growth assumptions remain constant in this estimate.
  • Taxes are simplified using the entered flat tax rate.
  • Brokerage fees, inflation, exchange rates, and market volatility are excluded.
  • Results are hypothetical and for educational purposes only.
  • This calculator does not provide financial advice.
